From cow to cone
Alex has had an interest in the dairy sector since childhood. Having been born and brought up in Portsoy, he has fond memories of working on the family farm, Cullen Street Dairy. This was a working farm originally run by Alex’s grandfather, James Murray, over one hundred years ago. Alex, along with brother Robert, milked cows and pasteurised and bottled the milk, which they delivered to the doorsteps of surrounding villages in time for breakfast. The business also distributed their milk to local hotels and shops.
Having expertise in the dairy industry, Alex saw utilising this in establishing an ice cream business as a natural progression. Portsoy Ice Cream began in 2003 and has developed from a small establishment (formerly known as “Riddoch’s”) into one making and serving over one hundred varieties of ice creams and sorbets in the premises. We have now expanded into supplying many shops, cafes, hotels and restaurants across Aberdeenshire, Aberdeen City and Moray as well as having a café area in the Portsoy shop and having a personalised events parlour available to hire for any occasion.
To this day, the focus remains on creating the highest quality product absent of added air. Alex retains his support for the local dairy industry by buying all our milk and cream, used to make our ice cream, from our nearest dairy in Nairn. We strive to create a customer experience nostalgic of the days of local shops and fresh, homemade produce. Our team look forward to welcoming you soon.
